Director\u00a0Martin Scorsese<\/strong>\u00a0is reflecting on his relationship with the late\u00a0Robbie Robertson<\/strong>\u00a0in a new interview with\u00a0Variety<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just miss Robbie, period,\u201d Scorsese tells the trade. \u201cThe friendship, the work, the tales he told \u2014 all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair had been friends for 47 years and collaborated on 14 projects, including the Scorsese-directed concert documentary\u00a0The Last Waltz<\/em>, featuring Robbie\u2019s group\u00a0The Band<\/strong>. Their final project was Scorsese\u2019s most recent release,\u00a0Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>, which Robertson completed before his death in August 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt meant a lot to both of us that we did this project together,\u201d he says. \u201cHe saw it through to the end, and that was nice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

So what was it that brought these two artists together in the first place? Scorsese says he and Robertson bonded over the love of their preferred craft.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe lived his music. I lived my movies,\u201d he shares. \u201cAnd when Robbie and I shared a house in Hollywood, he played me music, I showed him movies and we never stopped sharing our suggestions and thoughts and impressions and passions and pouring it all into the work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t really a conscious thing. Looking back on it now, I realize that it just happened spontaneously between us. It could have been as simple as each of us looking for inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scorsese already has plans for his next project, which means he\u2019s going to have to find a new person to collaborate with on the music, but he knows it will never be the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll work with people who bring something different,\u201d he says, \u201cbut I would never imagine that someone could replace Robbie.\u201d<\/p>\n
