Bob Dylan<\/strong>\u00a0was one of the many A-list stars who took part in the 1985 charity single “We Are the World,<\/a>” but according to\u00a0Lionel Richie<\/strong>, who co-wrote the song, he didn\u2019t have an easy time nailing down his contribution.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to promote\u00a0The Greatest Night In Pop<\/em>, a documentary about the making of the song, Richie reveals Dylan \u201cwas having a nervous breakdown\u201d\u00a0while recording his part.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s trying to sing it. And we said, \u2018No, we don\u2019t want you to sing it, just do it like Bob Dylan,\u2019\u201d Lionel shares. \u201cIf you\u2019re thrown in a room with a bunch of singers, you have a tendency to get psyched out, that you want to sound like them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

With each artists getting only a small portion to sing, Lionel explains, \u201cWe had to make sure that whoever was singing, your voice was identifiable right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, Bob Dylan has an identifiable voice instantly. But he was trying to sing it another way,\u201d he says. \u201cWe kept saying, \u2018No, just sing it like Bob Dylan.\u2019 But did you see that look on his face? He was like, well, what does that sound like?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe Are The World\u201d features huge stars like\u00a0Bruce Springsteen<\/strong>,\u00a0Billy Joel<\/strong>\u00a0and more, but one person who\u00a0didn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0show up for the recording session was\u00a0Prince<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“I was hoping he was going to come by,\u201d Lionel says. \u201cBut there\u2019s a point when that tape starts rolling, that\u2019s it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the end,\u00a0Huey Lewis<\/strong>\u00a0wound up taking Prince\u2019s part.<\/p>\n

“Poor Huey, even to this day, he still hasn\u2019t recovered. He did a great job,” Lionel laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Greatest Night in Pop<\/em>\u00a0premieres January 19 at the Sundance Film Festival; it hits Netflix on January 29.<\/p>\n
