Sunday, January 21, marked the 40th anniversary of\u00a0Yes<\/strong>\u2019 hit \u201cOwner of a Lonely Heart<\/a>\u201d hitting #1 on the\u00a0Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100, and\u00a0Trevor Rabin<\/strong>, the song\u2019s main writer, always had a feeling it would be a hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI had an idea that was going to be\u00a0the<\/em>\u00a0song because it’s very hooky and got all the ingredients,\u201d Rabin tells ABC Audio.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, Rabin says he actually wrote the\u00a0track on the toilet because\u00a0acoustically the sound was great in the\u00a0bathroom.<\/p>\n

He notes, \u201cWhen I wrote that riff, I thought, ‘Ohhh.’ I stopped and I actually pondered it and I thought, ‘This is either something really kind of cool or it might be just absolutely nothing.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Well, it certainly didn\u2019t turn out to be nothing. The song, which appeared on Yes\u2019 11th studio album,\u00a090125<\/em>, was the only Yes single to top the charts,\u00a0spending two weeks in the top spot. And the album turned out to be Yes\u2019 bestselling release, selling over 3 million copies\u00a0in the U.S.<\/p>\n

But not everyone immediately thought \u201cOwner of a Lonely Heart\u201d would be a hit. Rabin says\u00a0that after he wrote it he sent the song out to a bunch of people, including famed music executive\u00a0Clive Davis<\/strong>, who told him the song wasn’t commercial enough.<\/p>\n

But Rabin showed him, noting, “I sent him the\u00a0Billboard<\/em>\u00a0clipping of it [at] #1.”<\/p>\n
