John Densmore<\/strong>\u00a0is the reason we don\u2019t\u00a0hear music from\u00a0The Doors<\/strong>\u00a0in commercials, and he says his decision to fight against it was inspired by an incident with the group\u2019s late frontman,\u00a0Jim Morrison<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all started in 1968 when Buick offered us $75,000 \u2014 huge money at the time \u2014 to sell its new model,\u201d\u00a0the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer tells\u00a0The Spectator<\/a><\/em>, noting he, guitarist\u00a0Robby Krieger<\/strong>\u00a0and keyboardist\u00a0Ray Manzarek<\/strong>\u00a0all agreed to the deal without Morrison.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe came back and went nuts. Or, being Jim, what he actually said was that if they aired\u00a0the ad he would smash up a Buick on live TV with a sledgehammer,\u201d he says. \u201cA bulb went off over my head at that moment.”<\/p>\n

Densmore is so serious about not licensing The Doors’ music that he\u00a0took his former bandmates to court over it; things got testy in court, which hurt their relationship. \u201cAmong other things, they asked me if I was a communist, and whether I supported Al-Qaeda,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Densmore wound up winning the legal battle, and says his relationship with\u00a0Krieger and Manzarek did eventually improve.<\/p>\n

While Manzarek passed away in 2013, Densmore says they \u201cmade peace right before the end, for which I\u2019m eternally grateful.\u201d\u00a0As for his relationship with Krieger,\u00a0Densmore says they\u2019re friendly and hints at a possible project in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe might even do something together, but I can assure you it won\u2019t be called The Doors,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
