A court in\u00a0London has ruled that two members of the\u00a0Jimi Hendrix Experience<\/strong>\u00a0can sue Sony over the rights to the three albums they appeared on.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Billboard<\/a><\/em>, the heirs of Experience bassist\u00a0Noel Redding<\/strong>\u00a0and drummer\u00a0Mitch Mitchell<\/strong>\u00a0claim they are owed millions in royalties for the work the late musicians did on Hendrix\u2019s albums, something they informed Sony about in a letter in 2021.<\/p>\n

But Sony disagreed and soon filed a lawsuit in New York aiming to prove the\u00a0musicians didn’t have any rights to the music because they signed an agreement after Hendrix\u2019s death in which they got one-time payments in exchange for not suing Hendrix\u2019s estate or any labels distributing Hendrix\u2019s music.<\/p>\n

Sony\u2019s suit prompted the heirs to file their own suit in\u00a0England.\u00a0A judge in London\u2019s High Court ruled that Redding and Mitchell’s heirs can move forward with their lawsuit.<\/p>\n

Attorneys for the heirs told\u00a0Billboard<\/em>\u00a0in a statement that with the ruling \u201cwe can hopefully obtain some justice for the families.\u201d They noted, \u201cNo one is denying that Jimi Hendrix was one of, if not, the greatest guitarist of all time. But he didn\u2019t make his recordings alone, and they could not have achieved any success without the contributions of Noel and Mitch.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far there\u2019s no word on when or where a trial may take place.<\/p>\n
