It\u2019s been over 30 years since\u00a0Lenny Kravitz<\/strong>\u00a0burst on to the scene with his debut album,\u00a0Let Love Rule<\/em>, but if he listened to what music execs were telling him,\u00a0fans may never have heard it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told my music wasn\u2019t Black enough or wasn’t white enough,” Kravitz tells\u00a0People<\/a><\/em>, noting that record execs insisted he needed to choose a specific style if he wanted to be successful.<\/p>\n

“I was told that I need to make the music that Black people commercially are making that’s on the radio, so you’ll have success,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I just could never get with any of that. I was going to make the music that I made.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lenny, who’ll release the new album\u00a0Blue Electric Light<\/em>\u00a0on May 24, says his music has been influenced by all types of artists, like\u00a0Duke Ellington<\/strong>,\u00a0The Jackson 5<\/strong>,\u00a0Led Zeppelin\u00a0<\/strong>and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The inspiration was everything that I’d learned from a child to then musically. Blues, gospel, jazz, reggae, pop, R&B, rock and roll, everything,\u201d he says, noting that even Zeppelin was inspired by Black artists like\u00a0Chuck Berry<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Bo Diddley<\/strong>. He says of the band’s music, “When I heard it, this vortex opened up.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while Kravitz recently talked about\u00a0never\u00a0being recognized at Black award shows, he is now set to receive a very special honor from the Recording Academy\u2019s Black Music Collective. He\u2019ll be honored with the Global Impact Award, which \u201crecognizes Black music creators whose dedication to the art form has greatly influenced the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kravitz will receive the honor on Thursday, February 1, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles<\/p>\n
