A stage adaptation of\u00a0Prince<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Purple Rain<\/em>\u00a0is expected to wind up on Broadway, but before it hits the Great White Way, it will make its debut in Prince\u2019s hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The musical\u2019s pre-Broadway premiere is expected to take place in the spring of 2025, at Minneapolis\u2019 historic State Theatre.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Producer\u00a0Orin Wolf\u00a0<\/strong>is behind the show, which will be using Prince\u2019s original music. Two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist\u00a0Branden Jacobs-Jenkins\u00a0<\/strong>is on board to write the book, and Tony Award nominee\u00a0Lileana Blain-Cruz\u00a0<\/strong>is set to direct.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrince talked about adapting\u00a0Purple Rain\u00a0<\/em>for the stage for years. It\u2019s only fitting that we launch this world premiere musical version in the city where it all began, Prince\u2019s hometown, Minneapolis,\u201d said\u00a0L Londell McMillan,\u00a0<\/strong>chairman of The NorthStar Group, and\u00a0Larry Mestel<\/strong>, founder & CEO of Primary Wave Music. \u201cWe\u2019re very excited for the creative team to be inspired by the Minneapolis sound and the unparalleled and unique spirit of the city that Prince inspired.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Released in July 1984,\u00a0Purple Rain\u00a0<\/em>starred Prince as The Kid, a talented but troubled musician who escapes his abusive home life through his music. It also followed his budding romance with an aspiring singer, played by\u00a0Apollonia<\/strong>. The film grossed close to $70 million in the United States.<\/p>\n

The soundtrack was Prince\u2019s first #1 and spent 24 weeks on top of the chart, thanks to such hits as \u201cWhen Doves Cry,\u201d \u201cI Would Die 4 U,\u201d the title track and \u201cLet\u2019s Go Crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
