Queen<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Brian May<\/strong>\u00a0has revealed that he actually wasn\u2019t happy with \u201cUnder Pressure<\/a>,\u201d Queen\u2019s hit collaboration with\u00a0David Bowie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Total Guitar<\/a><\/em>, May says when they first started working on the song it featured a \u201cpretty heavy” guitar, which he thought sounded like\u00a0The Who<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I was beaming because I liked The Who,\u201d he says. \u201cI remember saying to David, \u2018Oh, it sounds like The Who, doesn\u2019t it?\u2019 He says, \u2018Yeah, well it\u2019s not going to sound like The Who by the time I\u2019ve finished with it!\u2019 You know, in a joking kind of way. But he didn\u2019t want it to be that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

May\u00a0says finishing the song was difficult because of all the different opinions being shared, and in the end the heavy guitar was removed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s probably the only time in my career I bowed out, because I knew it was going to be a fight,\u201d he says. \u201cSo basically it was\u00a0Freddie (Mercury)<\/strong>\u00a0and David fighting it out in the studio with the mix. And what happened in the mix was that most of that heavy guitar was lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the final product, May says, \u201cI never liked it, to be honest, the way it was mixed.” He adds, \u201cBut I do recognize that it works. It\u2019s a point of view, and it\u2019s done very well. And people love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Under Pressure” was released in October 1981; it became Queen’s second #1 in the U.K. and Bowie’s third. It also charted in the top 10 in 10 countries.<\/p>\n
