{"id":28820,"date":"2024-02-20T21:02:50","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T21:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/101gold\/trial-over-don-henleys-stolen-hotel-california-manuscripts-to-start-wednesday\/"},"modified":"2024-02-20T21:02:50","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T21:02:50","slug":"trial-over-don-henleys-stolen-hotel-california-manuscripts-to-start-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/101gold\/trial-over-don-henleys-stolen-hotel-california-manuscripts-to-start-wednesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial over Don Henley&#8217;s stolen &#8216;Hotel California&#8217; manuscripts to start Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/syndication.abcaudio.com\/files\/2024-02-20\/M_EaglesHotelCalifornia630_071222.jpg.jpg\" alt><figcaption>Elektra\/Asylum\/Warner Music Group<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Opening statements are expected Wednesday in the trial of three men charged in a conspiracy involving nearly 100 pages of <strong>Don Henley<\/strong>\u2019s handwritten notes and lyrics for the <strong>Eagles<\/strong> album <\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Hotel California<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the indictment,\u00a0<strong>Glen Horowitz<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Craig Inciardi\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Edward Kosinki<\/strong>\u00a0possessed notes that included lyrics to the songs \u201cHotel California,\u201d \u201cLife in the Fast Lane\u201d and \u201cNew Kid In Town.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite knowing the materials were stolen,\u00a0they attempted to sell the manuscripts, manufactured false provenance and lied to auction houses, potential buyers and law enforcement about the origin of the material, the Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The manuscripts were originally stolen in the late 1970s by an author\u00a0who&#8217;d been hired to write an Eagles biography.\u00a0In 2005 he sold the manuscripts to Horowitz, a rare books dealer, who\u00a0then\u00a0sold them to Inciardi and Kosinski.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Henley learned of the sale, he filed police reports, told the defendants the materials were stolen and demanded the return of his property. Prosecutors allege that rather than making any effort to ensure they actually had rightful ownership, the defendants responded by engaging in a yearslong campaign to prevent Henley from recovering the manuscripts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the indictment, Horowitz and Inciardi worked to fabricate the manuscripts&#8217; provenance and attempted to use that false statement of provenance to coerce Henley into buying back his stolen property. When trying to sell the manuscripts, Inciardi allegedly lied and withheld information regarding Henley\u2019s claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Horowitz also attempted to exploit the death of founding Eagles member <strong>Glenn Frey<\/strong> to prevent criminal prosecution: he allegedly produced a new false statement of provenance, this time claiming that the materials originated from Frey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2024, ABC Audio.
