AMC Theatres\/FIFTH SEASON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The documentary\u00a0<\/span>Kiss the Future<\/span><\/em>\u00a0features Irish rockers\u00a0U2<\/strong>, but it\u2019s not about the band \u2014 and that\u2019s just the way they wanted it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The film follows a group of underground musicians and creatives during the siege of Sarajevo, which lasted from April 1992 to February 1996. Aid worker Bill Carter<\/strong>\u00a0reached out to U2 to connect them with the locals, which eventually led to them playing a concert at Ko\u0161evo Stadium in 1997 to celebrate the country\u2019s liberation.<\/span><\/p>\n

While having U2 be part of the film was important, Matt Damon<\/strong>, one of the film\u2019s producers, tells <\/span>Variety<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>the rockers\u00a0were concerned about taking the focus\u00a0away from the story.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t want it to be yet another U2 concert film. They didn\u2019t want to be the primary focus,\u201d Damon says, noting the film\u2019s director,\u00a0Nenad Cicin-Sain<\/strong>, was\u00a0fine with that because he wanted the film to\u00a0tell the story of Carter and the Sarajevans.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to present their stories of what happened as a sort of collective memory of the time,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce the band heard that, they came on board as quickly as we did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But while U2 wasn\u2019t the focus of the film, Damon knew their contribution to it was important.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo do this properly, we not only needed their sign off, but also their footage from the concerts where they did the satellite interviews with Bill Carter as well as footage from the concert they performed in Sarajevo \u2014 this had never been seen before, by anyone,\u201d he says. \u201cWithout that, we simply couldn\u2019t tell the story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kiss the Future<\/span><\/em> is set to open exclusively in <\/span>AMC theaters<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the U.S. starting February 23 and will stream on Paramount + later this year.<\/span><\/p>\n
