Gary Rossington<\/strong>, guitarist for Southern rock legends\u00a0Lynyrd Skynyrd<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>passed away at the age of 71.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rossington, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2006, was the last remaining original member of Skynyrd’s lineup. He had been the last surviving original member of the band following the death of\u00a0Larry Junstrom\u00a0<\/strong>in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rossington played guitar on many of the band\u2019s biggest hits, including \u201cSimple Man” and “Sweet Alabama,” both of which he co-wrote with\u00a0Ronnie Van Zant<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>as well as “Tuesday\u2019s Gone.\u201d He also played slide guitar on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s signature tune \u201cFree Bird.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rossington was one of the passengers who survived the October, 20, 1977, Mississippi plane crash that took the lives of Lynyrd Skynyrd members Ronnie Van Zant,\u00a0Steve <\/strong>and\u00a0Cassie Gaines<\/strong>\u00a0and three others. He broke both his arms, legs, wrists, ankles and pelvis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lynyrd Skynyrd decided to continue as a band after Rossington’s death. They launch a new leg of the Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour with ZZ Top<\/strong> on Friday, March 8, in Savannah, Georgia. A complete list of dates can be found at lynyrdskynyrd.com<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
