Bruce Hornsby<\/strong> has had many highlights throughout his career, but in an interview with <\/span>Music Radar<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0he reveals one of\u00a0his favorite things he\u2019s ever done is join the Grateful Dead<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussing the artists he’s worked with in the past, he shared, \u201cBut the collaboration I had most fun with was joining the Grateful Dead.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat whole scene … the fans, playing one song for a couple of hours, the people I met, the body of work that those guys created. OK, it might not be on a par with The Beatles<\/strong>, but it\u2019s pretty darn close,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hornsby initially performed with the Dead whenever he and The Range<\/strong> would open for them, but started filling in regularly when they were between keyboardists in the early ’90s.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the great thing was that they simply sat me down and said, \u2018play whatever you want,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThere were no rules, no funny looks if you came in at the wrong place. There was no \u2018wrong place!’ It was pure music and it was wonderful.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cMan, I wouldn\u2019t trade my time with the Dead for anything.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

And while Hornsby had lots of fun touring with them, he didn\u2019t have the kind of hallucinogenic fun some may associate with\u00a0the band.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew the score. Bear Stanley<\/strong> [the Dead\u2019s live sound engineer, who was known as The Acid King] was still with them and he was wandering around backstage, dropping a little of this and that into the Kool-Aid,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I took Bear to one side and told him, \u2018Look, this ain\u2019t my thing. You dose me and I\u2019m outta here.\u2019”<\/span><\/p>\n

He noted, “He was true to his word. Not that it stopped the rest of the guys having a ball up there!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
