The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland has a new exhibit called\u00a0<\/span>Revolutionary Women in Music: Left of Center<\/span><\/em>, featuring items from groundbreaking female artists across all genres of music.\u00a0One of those artists is The Go-Go\u2019s<\/strong>, and guitarist Jane Wiedlin<\/strong> has some opinions about who should be represented.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, the women from the past, right? Like Ella Fitzgerald<\/strong>, Etta James<\/strong>\u00a0and Aretha Franklin<\/strong> and then Patti Smith<\/strong> in the ’70s,\u201d she tells ABC Audio. \u201cAnd then, I mean, I think of The Go-Go’s in the ’80s because we were kind of a revolution.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The exhibit is important considering the Hall of Fame’s been called out\u00a0for\u00a0lack of female representation in the past, something Wiedlin and her bandmates know all to well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Go-Go\u2019s were inducted into the hall in 2021, but it took 15 years after they were first eligible to even be nominated. Wiedlin blames that on sexism,\u00a0claiming there was one man on the nominating committee who kept them off the ballot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were literally the first all-female band to play their own instruments that wrote their own songs, and that were hugely successful,\u201d she says. \u201cWe were the first, and that alone is enough that we deserved a place in this Hall of Fame.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

But things have been getting better, with more female artists being inducted in the past few years. Wiedlin sees that, and the new exhibit, as a great example of change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rock\u00a0& Roll Hall of Fame, speaking of revolutionary, it is really changed. They’re noticing all the important female artists finally,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cThere’s not enough of us, but there are a lot of us.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
