The Who<\/strong>\u2019s Roger Daltrey<\/strong> recently stepped down as curator of the annual Teenage Cancer Trust charity shows after 24 years, and he’s\u00a0now opening up about why he decided to retire from the position.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have to be realistic. I\u2019m on my way out,\u201d the 80-year-old rocker wrote in a backstage diary for U.K.’s\u00a0<\/span>The Times<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe average life expectancy is 83 and with a bit of luck I\u2019ll make that, but we need someone else to drive things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Daltrey isn\u2019t stepping away from the charity completely but will stick to working behind the scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n

For his final year, The Who headlined two of this year\u2019s shows at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall, and\u00a0Daltrey\u00a0headlined a third show with\u00a0a series of guests to\u00a0celebrate\u00a0his tenure as curator.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rocker revealed that before taking the stage for those shows, he was actually worried \u201cabout how many words\u201d he needed to remember for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t done anything for seven months and this winter\u2019s been brutal. I\u2019ve been in hibernation. For the whole of January, I lost my voice completely,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI live like a monk and if I went on tour for a week I\u2019d be fit as a butcher\u2019s dog again, but tonight, for the first time in my career, I think, \u2018Blimey, this is hard.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Daltrey seems ready to hang it up, his bandmate Pete Townshend<\/strong>\u00a0has indicated he was up for at least one more tour. In a recent interview with\u00a0<\/span>The New York Times<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>he shared, \u201cIt feels to me like there\u2019s one thing the Who can do, and that\u2019s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die.”<\/span><\/p>\n
