Bob Burns<\/strong>, the original drummer for Southern rock band\u00a0Lynyrd Skynyrd<\/strong>, died in a car crash near his home in Cartersville, Georgia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns helped to form Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964 with\u00a0Ronnie Van Zant<\/strong>,\u00a0Gary Rossington<\/strong>,\u00a0Allen Collins\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Larry Junstrom<\/strong>, but left the group in 1974.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is credited on recordings from the group\u2019s first two albums: 1973\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>(Pronounced \u2018L\u0115h-\u2018n\u00e9rd \u2018Skin-\u2018n\u00e9rd)\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and 1974\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Second Helping<\/span><\/em>. Those include such Lynyrd Skynyrd classics as \u201cFree Bird,\u201d \u201cSweet Home Alabama\u201d and \u201cSimple Man.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1996, after years out of the public eye, Burns joined the band for a performance in conjunction with the film\u00a0<\/span>Freebird: The Movie<\/span><\/em>. Then, in March of 2006, he returned to perform alongside the band at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour to this day, although no members of the original band remain. The last original member, Gary Rossington<\/strong>, died in March of 2023. Skynyrd\u00a0is currently on their Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour with ZZ Top<\/strong>, which hits Biloxi, Mississippi, on April 4.
