On This Day, April 9, 1984\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

R.E.M.<\/strong> released their second studio album, <\/span>Reckoning,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>which, like their 1983 debut,\u00a0<\/span>Murmur<\/span><\/em>, was produced by Mitch Easter\u00a0<\/strong>and Don Dixon<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album, which was first released in the U.K. and then the U.S., was recorded at Reflection Sound in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the producers attempting to capture the energy and sound of the band\u2019s live performances.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reckoning<\/span><\/em>\u00a0was a hit with critics and peaked at #27 in the U.S., although it topped college radio airplay charts. Its first single,\u00a0\u201cSo. Central Rain (I\u2019m Sorry),” peaked at #86 on the <\/span>Billboard<\/span><\/em> Hot 100, while its second single,\u00a0 \u201c(Don\u2019t Go Back to) Rockville,” did not chart. Both went on to become R.E.M. fan favorites.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album has been\u00a0certified Gold by the RIAA.<\/span><\/p>\n
