The Library of Congress has chosen <\/span>25 new recordings<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to join the National Recording Registry, including classics by Blondie<\/strong>, The Cars\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0ABBA<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The albums were chosen for preservation based on their \u201ccultural, historical or aesthetic importance” and include The Cars’ self-titled debut, which\u00a0featured such songs as “Just What I Needed,” “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “Good Times Roll,” as well as Blondie\u2019s <\/span>Parallel Lines<\/span><\/em>, which\u00a0included their hit \u201cHeart of Glass.\u201d Other albums chosen for preservation include Green Day<\/strong>\u2019s <\/span>Dookie<\/span><\/em>, Jefferson Airplane<\/strong>\u2019s <\/span>Surrealistic Pillow<\/span><\/em> and ABBA\u2019s <\/span>Arrival<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Songs chosen for preservation include ABBA\u2019s \u201cDancing Queen,\u201d \u201cAin\u2019t No Sunshine\u201d by Bill Withers<\/strong>, \u201cRudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer\u201d by Gene Autry<\/strong> and Bobby McFerrin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Worry, Be Happy.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Library of Congress is proud to preserve the sounds of American history and our diverse culture through the National Recording Registry,\u201d Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden<\/strong> shares. \u201cWe have selected audio treasures worthy of preservation with our partners this year, including a wide range of music from the past 100 years, as well as comedy. We were thrilled to receive a record number of public nominations, and we welcome the public\u2019s input on what we should preserve next.\u201d<\/p>\n

The public can nominate recordings to be considered; this year, the Library of Congress received a record\u00a0<\/span>2,899 nominations. With the new additions, the National Recording Registry titles are now at 650, part of a recorded sound collection of close to 4 million items.<\/p>\n
