A lot of music fans will be lining up at independent record stores across the country for Record Store Day on Saturday, April 20, but the day is about more than just landing that special release.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s almost like Record Store Day is two different days in one,” RSD co-founder Carrie Colliton <\/strong>tells ABC Audio. “In the morning, it’s all about, \u2018Oh, I got this special treasure.’ … But the second half of the day is a party, and a celebration of stores and what they do in the community all year long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

RSD started in 2007 and artists like Metallica<\/strong>, Dave Grohl<\/strong> and Wilco<\/strong>\u2019s Jeff Tweedy<\/strong> were early supporters, but for RSD co-founder Michael Kurtz<\/strong>, it was when Paul McCartney<\/strong> emailed them after an in-store appearance that he knew they had made it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kurtz notes, \u201cThat was the moment I think we all were like, \u2018Holy crap, one of the Beatles<\/strong> likes us,’\u201d adding it made them realize\u00a0they\u00a0“must be doing something right.”<\/span><\/p>\n

And this year there are several Beatles-related items fans can get their hands on, including Ringo Starr<\/strong>\u2019s new EP,\u00a0<\/span>Crooked Boy<\/span><\/em>, and zoetrope picture disc pressings of two George Harrison<\/strong> albums.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a collectible mini turntable featuring the songs The Beatles played on\u00a0<\/span>The Ed Sullivan Show <\/span><\/em>60 years ago. \u201cIt’s so cute. You just can’t help but smile or laugh when you see it because it’s just adorable,\u201d Kurtz shares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course there are lots of other records to pick up on Saturday, including a Lou Reed<\/strong> tribute album, Neil Young<\/strong>\u2019s new album,\u00a0<\/span>FU##IN\u2019 UP<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>two releases from The Rolling Stones<\/strong>.
