Allman Brothers Band<\/strong> founding member Dickey Betts<\/strong> has died at the age of 80, according to a post on his official <\/span>Instagram page<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard ‘Dickey’ Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) at the age of 80 years old,\u201d read\u00a0the statement. \u201cThe legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch passed away earlier today at his home in Osprey, FL., surrounded by his family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt world-wide,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cAt this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Betts co-founded Allman Brothers Band in 1969\u00a0along with brothers Duane<\/strong> and Gregg Allman<\/strong>, Berry Oakley<\/strong>, Butch Trucks<\/strong>\u00a0and Jaimoe Johanson<\/strong>,\u00a0releasing their self-titled debut that year. They went on to be considered one of the pioneering Southern rock bands and were particularly known for their touring career, which included long shows filled with extended jams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to playing lead guitar in the band, Betts wrote and sang lead\u00a0on several songs, including \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man,\u201d their only top 10 hit, and \u201cBlue Sky.” He also composed the band\u2019s well-known instrumental tunes, including \u201cJessica\u201d and \u201cIn Memory of Elizabeth Reed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the years, the\u00a0Allman Brothers Band went on hiatus, while Betts concentrated on other projects, including a solo career and forming other bands, like\u00a0Great Southern<\/strong>,\u00a0Betts<\/strong>, Hall<\/strong>, Leavell and Trucks<\/strong> and the Dickey Betts Band<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Betts was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\u00a0as a member of\u00a0Allman Brothers Band in 1995.\u00a0He was officially ousted from\u00a0the band in 2000 and never played with them again.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Dickey\u2019s death, 79-year-old drummer Jaimoe Johanson is the last\u00a0living Allman Brothers co-founder.<\/span><\/p>\n
