Gov\u2019t Mule<\/strong>\u2019s Warren Haynes<\/strong> has paid tribute to Allman Brothers Band<\/strong> co-founder Dickey Betts<\/strong>, who passed away April 18 at the age of 80.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuch a huge loss. Not only for our musical family, but for the world of music in general,\u201d Haynes, who joined the Allman Brothers in 1989, <\/span>shares on Instagram<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. \u201cAside from being a huge, major influence on my music from before I picked up a guitar, Dickey was the one person I credit for everything amazing that happened in my career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Haynes writes of listening to Allman Brothers\u2019 <\/span>Live at Filmore East<\/span><\/em> as he started playing guitar. \u201cListening as a kid I had no idea that one day our paths would cross and that he would become a mentor to me,\u201d he shares, calling Dickey \u201ca presence that loomed larger than life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Haynes was in Dickey\u2019s band for over two years before joining the Allman Brothers, where he says he felt challenged by\u00a0up his game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDickey Betts and I created a lot of great music together and what I took from him was a major contribution in my life,\u201d he shares. \u201cIt did not take long once I joined his band to realize, standing next to him with that beautiful tone, that I had a lot to work to do on both with my tone and with my style.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cIt was amazingly intimidating to stand there night after night realizing how far I had to go. He threw me in the lake and I had to learn to swim. I am forever grateful for that ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Also paying tribute\u00a0is Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks<\/strong> and his wife and performing partner,\u00a0Susan Tedeschi<\/strong>, who <\/span>simply wrote<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, \u201cOne of the best to ever do it. Rest easy Dickey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
