Grateful Dead<\/strong> drummer Bill Kreutzmann<\/strong> is the latest artist to pay tribute to Allman Brothers Band<\/strong> guitarist Dickey Betts<\/strong>, who passed away April 18 at the age of 80.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a <\/span>post on Instagram<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Kreutzmann writes of the \u201cintertwined past\u201d of the two bands, noting, \u201c[W]e saw ourselves as fellows, part of a movement that was bigger than either band,\u201d calling the Allman Brothers “the southern counterpart to the Grateful Dead.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>@dickeybettsofficial<\/span>\u00a0was a huge part of the Allman sound and his twin guitar leads with Duane<\/strong> were as influential to southern rock as just about any other single element,\u201d he shares.<\/span><\/p>\n

He then recalled\u00a0playing with the Allmans in San Francisco one New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGetting to play behind Betts was just one of those things where you know you are in the company of greatness and you\u2019re just trying to live in that moment,\u201d he concludes. \u201cWell, that moment \u2014 and many others \u2014 will now live forever in my heart.” He signed the post,\u00a0\u201cSo long, old friend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kreutzmann\u2019s Grateful Dead bandmate Mickey Hart<\/strong> also paid tribute to Dickey, sharing a Dead-inspired drawing of the rocker <\/span>with the caption<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, \u201cMay the four winds blow Dickey safely home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
