The second annual American Music Honors,\u00a0hosted by\u00a0the Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> Archives & Center For American Music at Monmouth University, took place\u00a0in New Jersey\u00a0on Wednesday,\u00a0with The Boss\u00a0on hand to induct one of this year\u2019s honorees, John Mellencamp<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeymour, Indiana, is the birthplace of our next honoree, and I have been there and I can tell you it is a small town,\u201d Springsteen shared, according to the <\/span>Asbury Park Press<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>. \u201cHis eye for the details of working-class life in the belly of the country has been flawless and unforgiving.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He noted of Mellencamp’s songs, “[H]e\u2019s captured and remained true to an unflinching vision of a country at war with itself, a country caught between its hard realities and better angels.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Mellencamp took the stage to perform an acoustic version of \u201cJack and Diane,\u201d\u00a0but later in the night, Springsteen honored him by performing\u00a0his take on Mellencamp’s classic\u00a0\u201cSmall Town,\u201d with the Indiana rocker joining him.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s other honorees included\u00a0Jackson Browne<\/strong>, who performed \u201cRunning on Empty\u201d and \u201cTake It Easy\u201d;\u00a0Mavis Staples<\/strong>, who performed \u201cCome Go With Me\u201d; and Dion DiMucci<\/strong>, who performed \u201cKing of New York Streets\u201d and \u201cThe Wanderer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The night ended with Springsteen returning to the stage, backed by the house band, Steven Van Zandt<\/strong>\u2019s Disciples of Soul<\/strong>,\u00a0to perform\u00a0“Glory Days\u201d and \u201cTenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” Staples and the other acts also performed the gospel hymn \u201cWill The Circle Be Unbroken.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The first American Music Honors event was held in 2023.\u00a0Van Zandt, Sam and Dave<\/strong>‘s Sam Moore<\/strong>, Darlene Love<\/strong>\u00a0and Steve Earle<\/strong> were the honorees.<\/span><\/p>\n
