Why go to the beach when you can spend Memorial Day weekend\u00a0with\u00a0The Beach Boys<\/strong>? A new documentary about the group debuts May 24 on Disney +, giving fans insight into\u00a0their rise to fame and lasting legacy,\u00a0and all the bumps along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0doc is directed by filmmaker Frank Marshall<\/strong>, who\u00a0tells ABC Audio learning how The Beach Boys turned into such a legendary band is what first attracted him to the project.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI knew it was a family story, I grew up in a musical family, too,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I wanted to understand how the dynamics and how the blend came together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cI don’t think a lot of people understand what went in and how hard they worked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Brian Wilson<\/strong> is often singled out for his work in the Beach Boys, specifically on their iconic album <\/span>Pet<\/span><\/em> <\/span>Sounds<\/span><\/em>, singer Mike Love<\/strong> says he\u2019s happy the documentary gives fans insight into how important each member was to the group.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFinally the story is told from a broad enough perspective where it honors everybody’s contribution,\u201d he says, noting it’s a ‘”bit more objective and yet unifying in a way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Guitarist Al Jardine<\/strong> says he was a fan of the rediscovered\u00a0live footage in the film, sharing, \u201cI enjoyed watching us, that young energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The making of the film also helped facilitate a reunion between Love and Wilson, who hadn\u2019t talked in years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe sat together, we sang together, we reminisced together,\u201d Love says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wilson\u00a0has since been placed under a conservatorship due to\u00a0a neurocognitive disorder, but Love says\u00a0Wilson\u00a0still remembers a lot about their past.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking, ‘Wow, his long-term memory is way intact, better than mine,’\u201d he says. \u201cSo that was really fantastic to see.<\/span><\/p>\n
