David Byrne\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Devo<\/strong>\u2019s contribution to the new compilation album\u00a0<\/span>Noise For Now Vol. 2,<\/span><\/em> raising money to benefit abortion access and reproductive rights, has been released.<\/span><\/p>\n

The track, \u201cEmpire,\u201d was one of two songs Byrne recorded with Devo for the\u00a01997 album <\/span>Feelings<\/span><\/em>, although it never made the record.<\/span><\/p>\n

Byrne says the tune \u201cis an ironic capitalist fascist anthem and, at the time, I thought our version was just too mean and caustic for release.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, times change, and it certainly resonates now in ways it maybe didn’t then,\u201d he shares. \u201cIt was a joy to work with the\u00a0Devo\u00a0guys, they knew exactly what the song is about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Devo’s Gerald Casale<\/strong> adds, \u201cWe were on board working with the dark satire of David Byrne\u2019s \u2018Empire\u2019 over 30 years ago. The song was prescient and we got it. Now it can be heard!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Put out by the nonprofit organization Noise for Now, the album<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>also\u00a0features songs from\u00a0Courtney Barnett<\/strong>,\u00a0The War On Drugs<\/strong>,\u00a0Faye Webster\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Big Freedia<\/strong>. It will be released digitally and on limited-edition vinyl on June 21 to coincide with the second anniversary of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proceeds will benefit independent abortion providers in the country, with 90% of all money raised going directly to reproductive health, rights and justice organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n
