The four members of R.E.M.<\/strong> \u2013 Michael Stipe<\/strong>, Mike Mills<\/strong>, Bill Berry<\/strong> and Peter Buck<\/strong> \u2013 sit down with <\/span>CBS Mornings<\/span><\/em> Thursday for what will be their first interview together in almost 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The band is set to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame that night, and\u00a0in <\/span>a\u00a0preview of the interview<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0they discuss how it feels to be\u00a0recognized for their songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe lived or died on the strength of our songs, so this is a huge honor,\u201d Mills shares, with Buck adding, \u201cIt is the hardest thing that we do and it\u2019s the thing that we worked on the most from the very beginning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we had to,” Berry chimes in. \u201cI mean early on just to put food on the table we had to write songs as fast as we could.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

When asked if they ever look at their body of work as a whole, Mills noted that they aren\u2019t quite that self-indulgent, to which Stipe interrupted with, \u201cOK I am.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then I wind up on YouTube and I watch some live performance, I\u2019m like, \u2018Wow I can\u2019t believe we did that,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cLike we did, we did things and we did it really well from time to time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala takes place Thursday in New York City. This year’s other inductees include\u00a0Steely Dan<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Donald Fagen\u00a0<\/strong>and the late\u00a0Walter Becker<\/strong>, Timbaland<\/strong>, Hillary Lindsey <\/strong>and Dean Pitchford<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
