The four members of R.E.M<\/strong>. \u2013 Michael Stipe<\/strong>, Mike Mills<\/strong>, Peter Buck<\/strong> and Bill Berry<\/strong> – opened up about their decision to call it quits in 2011\u00a0during their first interview together in nearly 30 years, which aired Thursday on <\/span>CBS Mornings<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think the main reason was at that point, there wasn\u2019t anything we could agree on really musically. What kind of music, how to record it, are we going to go on tour,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Buck said. “We could barely agree on where to go to dinner. And now we can just agree on where to go to dinner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’re also here to tell the tale, and we’re sitting at the same table together with deep admiration and lifelong friendship,” Stipe added. “A lot of people that do this can’t claim that.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Buck explained they’re still friends because, \u201cI think we quit at the right time,” noting,\u00a0“This is a really good place to finish, you know \u2013 great tour, great album, go home.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Buck, Stipe and Mills all said they have no\u00a0regrets about their decision to end R.E.M., although Berry, who quit\u00a0the band two years after suffering a double brain aneurysm onstage in 1995, does have some about his departure.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked\u00a0about\u00a0it he got emotional, sharing, \u201cThat was a weird time for me and I made it weird for these guys, too.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

But while they may still be friends, fans shouldn\u2019t hold out hope for a reunion. When asked what it would take to get them performing together again, Mills joked, \u201ca comet,\u201d with Buck giving a good reason why it won\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’d never be as good,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The interview coincides with R.E.M.’s\u00a0induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which is happening Thursday in\u00a0New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n
