Mike Campbell<\/strong> and his band The Dirty Knobs<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0third album, <\/span>Vagabonds, Virgins and Misfits<\/span><\/em>, is out now, and\u00a0Campbell tells ABC Audio the record shows them coming into their own sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

He says the first two albums proved they were \u201ca rock ‘n\u2019 roll boogie band mostly,\u201d but they’re evolving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re expanding our songwriting as we go along and getting better,\u201d he says, \u201cand I’m finding my voice as a ‘stylist,’ not a singer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After so many years in the background as\u00a0guitarist and songwriter\u00a0for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers<\/strong>, Campbell says it hasn\u2019t been hard for him to step into the frontman role, but it was certainly an adjustment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s mostly coming out of a little insecurity and getting used to the sound of my own voice,\u201d he says, noting he made some adjustments to his voice because it had similar\u00a0nuances to\u00a0Petty’s.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to filter those out so I didn’t sound like a clone,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt was mostly confidence, just building up my confidence that, yeah, you can do this.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The album features guest appearances by Graham Nash <\/strong>and\u00a0Chris Stapleton<\/strong>, with Campbell\u00a0sharing that songs on the record were\u00a0influenced by the music he grew up listening to in the ’60s, like The Beatles <\/strong>and\u00a0The Stones<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“That’s the stuff I emulate,” he says.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the album’s title, Campbell says it\u2019s inspired by\u00a0the songs, which are filled with \u201cdesperate people\u201d trying for a better life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I thought there’s a lot of desperate vagabonds, misfit-type people,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I threw virgins just cause it sounded good.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
