Def Leppard<\/strong> recently released the new single \u201c<\/span>Just Like 73<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d and it turns out it was a song they\u2019ve been hanging onto for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guitarist Phil Collen<\/strong> tells ABC Audio the tune is one he demoed while they were recording their 2022\u00a0album,\u00a0<\/span>Diamond Star Halos<\/span><\/em>. He notes\u00a0it all started with \u201cthe classic Mike Leander<\/strong> drum sound,\u201d referring to the producer known for working with\u00a0Gary Glitter<\/strong>\u00a0on his hits “Rock and Roll Part 1” and “Rock and Roll Part 2.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Collen says\u00a0“Just Like 73″ was inspired by \u201cbig hits from the early ’70s” that\u00a0featured chants like the one\u00a0featured in the song.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe backing vocals, we just shout in tune, we don’t sing,\u201d Collen notes. \u201cThere’s a lot of bands who do very nice harmonies, which we can do, but it’s more the Sex Pistols<\/strong> kind of school of shouting the stuff out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He says the song also has a bit of T-Rex<\/strong>\u2019s Marc Bolan<\/strong>, with the lyrics inspired by David Bowie<\/strong>, who was a huge influence for Collen growing up.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe three albums by Bowie, <\/span>Hunky Dory<\/span><\/em>, <\/span>Ziggy Stardust<\/span><\/em> and <\/span>Aladdin Sane<\/span><\/em>, my favorites,\u201d he says, noting that music \u201cshaped where I was going musically.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

An added bonus on “Just Like 73”\u00a0is a guitar solo by Rage Against the Machine<\/strong>\u2019s Tom Morello<\/strong>,\u00a0who used to cover Def Leppard’s “Rock of Ages” growing up.\u00a0Collen says\u00a0Morello heard the demo, loved the song and wanted to be on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been great. And, you know, I love Tom Morello, love Rage Against the Machine,\u201d he says. \u201cSo that was really cool.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
