Music fans know\u00a0Stevie Van Zandt\u00a0<\/strong>as the legendary guitarist in\u00a0Bruce Springsteen<\/strong>‘s\u00a0E Street Band<\/strong>, but he\u2019s a lot more than that, as they\u2019ll learn watching the new documentary\u00a0<\/span>Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Director\u00a0Bill Teck\u00a0<\/strong>tells ABC Audio he\u2019s been a Van Zandt fan since his teens and wanted to make the film to show people all sides of the rocker.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like people knew some of the story, but not all the story,\u201d Teck says. \u201cSome of the work, but not all the work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The film covers Van Zandt\u2019s early days starting out with Springsteen in Asbury Park, his solo career, his acting career and his role as a rock historian. It also focuses on his activism, including his 1985 all-star charity single \u201cSun City,\u201d which helped end apartheid in South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The doc features previously unseen footage, including long-lost video of Stevie\u2019s wedding to his wife of over 40 years,\u00a0Maureen<\/strong>, in which Springsteen was best man and\u00a0Little Richard\u00a0<\/strong>performed the service. There\u2019s also very early footage of Stevie\u2019s days with Springsteen and\u00a0Southside Johnny<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teck notes, \u201cFor me, as a lifelong fan, to be able to show other fans this great stuff was very fulfilling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course covering everything about Van Zandt wasn\u2019t easy, and Teck says the original cut of the doc was quite long.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s all the many lives of Stevie. He\u2019s Miami Steve, he\u2019s Little Steven, he\u2019s the activist, the entrepreneur. There’s the friendship with Springsteen. There’s the love for rock ‘n’ roll,\u201d Teck notes. \u201cThere’s so many different threads, so it was challenging to get all that in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
