The new tribute album to the late Tom Petty<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span>Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>is out now, and Petty\u2019s Heartbreakers<\/strong> guitarist Mike Campbell<\/strong> is 100 percent behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’m so proud of all those artists, and I know that Tom would really be proud and happy that all these artists honored his songs,\u201d Campbell tells ABC Audio.<\/span>\u00a0“I just want his memory and the legacy that we built together, I’m very proud of it, and anything that illuminates it is good for me.”<\/p>\n

Campbell even appears on the album, joining Margo Price<\/strong> for her cover of \u201c<\/span>Ways to Be Wicked<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u201d Campbell says it was written for\u00a0Petty and the Heartbreakers’\u00a0second album, 1978’s\u00a0<\/span>You’re Gonna Get It!,<\/span><\/em> but \u201chas been collecting dust all these decades.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s, like, perfect for her, you know, a woman’s point of view and the way she belts it,\u201d Campbell says, \u201cand then she cut it and asked me to join in, and I put some guitar, little harmony on there. I call it a Lazarus song. It came back from the dead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Campbell says some of his favorite covers on the album include Dolly Parton<\/strong>\u2019s take on \u201c<\/span>Southern Accents<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u201d and Chris Stapleton<\/strong>\u2019s cover of \u201c<\/span>I Should Have Known It,<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u201d but he notes, \u201cI like them all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think Tom would have liked it,\u201d he says. \u201cIt’s nice to get the songs out there and keep them alive, keep people aware that, you know, Tom was real and he’s still with us with the music.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Campbell, who recently released<\/span> Vagabonds<\/span><\/em>, <\/span>Virgins & Misfits<\/span><\/em>, a new album with his band The Dirty Knobs<\/strong>, is currently on tour.
