On This Day, June 27, 2002 …<\/span><\/p>\n

One day before the start of The Who<\/strong>\u2019s U.S. tour, bassist John \u201cThe Ox\u201d Entwistle<\/strong> died of a cocaine-induced heart attack. He was found dead in his room at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas by the groupie and stripper he had spent the night with.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was 57.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Ox has left the building\u2014we’ve lost another great friend,\u201d The Who’s Roger Daltrey<\/strong> and Pete Townshend<\/strong>\u00a0shared in a tribute after Entwistle\u2019s death. \u201cThanks for your support and love. Pete and Roger.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Who decided to go on with their tour and\u00a0resumed their\u00a0shows on July 1 with bassist Pino Palladino<\/strong> taking Entwistle\u2019s place.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to his time with The Who, Entwistle released several solo albums, which\u00a0were the subject of a new box set,\u00a0<\/span>The Ox Box Set,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\ufeffreleased in May. A compilation of rarities,\u00a0<\/span>Rarities Oxhumed – Volume Two, <\/span><\/em>is due out in August.<\/span><\/p>\n
