After ZZ Top<\/strong> bassist Dusty Hill<\/strong> passed away in July 2021, <\/span>Elwood Francis<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>the band’s guitar tech, took over the\u00a0job permanently, but he\u00a0says he\u2019s still not completely comfortable in the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While it\u00a0was Hill\u2019s wish for\u00a0Elwood take over for him, Elwood tells\u00a0<\/span>Guitar World<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0it still feels \u201cweird\u201d having the gig, which he originally thought would just be temporary.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first started doing it, Dusty was just sick and going home for a few weeks. It was entirely different; I was just helping out,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn’t have to worry about the weight of the crown because I was just helping.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cThey pulled me aside and said, ‘Can you honestly say you can’t play his parts?’ I said, ‘I can do it, but I don’t think people would enjoy me doing it.’ They said, ‘You can cover him for a few weeks.’\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Elwood’s now been\u00a0ZZ Top’s\u00a0bassist for three years, but\u00a0he still has mixed feelings about it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’d done some gigs when Dusty passed, and by that time, I wouldn’t say I was comfortable because I’m still not f***** comfortable,\u201d he shares. \u201cIt’s just weird. Dusty is their bass player. I’m not the bass player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cI’m not in the band. I’ll never be in the band. I shouldn’t be in the band. It’s Dusty’s thing. Sure, I’ll still play with them, but it’s a weird thing, man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
