Deep Purple<\/strong>‘s new studio album,\u00a0<\/span>=1<\/span><\/em> (equals one), is out now and longtime bassist Roger Glover<\/strong> tells ABC Audio the inspiration for the album\u2019s title came from the \u201cstrange mind\u201d of lead singer Ian Gillan<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glover said Gillan once questioned how big of an equation someone could come up with where the answer would equal one, then had a mathematician friend come up with an example.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he showed it to me and I said, \u2018You know, that could be a title,\u2019 and he said, \u2018Yeah, I think so, too,’\u201d Glover shares. Gillan then wondered if the equation itself should be the title, but Glover notes, \u201cI said no, just ‘equals one.’\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Deep\u00a0Purple is\u00a0now made up of Glover, Gillan, drummer\u00a0Ian Paice<\/strong>, keyboardist\u00a0Don Airey\u00a0<\/strong>and guitarist\u00a0Simon McBride<\/strong>. Glover\u00a0says the title’s perfect for a band that he describes as having \u201ca long soap opera history\u201d with\u00a0so many lineup changes,\u00a0because\u00a0despite it all, \u201cwe\u2019re still one band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The album features singles like \u201cPortable Door,\u201d \u201cPictures of You\u201d and “Lazy Sod,\u201d which Glover says they didn\u2019t actually write in the traditional sense.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSongs evolve rather than are written,\u201d he\u00a0says of the band\u2019s process. \u201cAnd it starts with a sort of jam session for a week or so. We just have fun, play this and play that, and then pick out the ones that are most promising.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Glover has been with Deep Purple on and off since 1969, and more than 50 years later he can\u2019t believe he and his bandmates are still making music together.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’m totally amazed. Every day,\u201d he says. \u201cI can’t believe that I’ve had a history that I’ve had with this band,” adding,\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s a destiny that we will survive … well, at least for a bit more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
