{"id":29989,"date":"2024-07-24T18:04:40","date_gmt":"2024-07-24T18:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/101gold\/eric-clapton-pays-tribute-to-mentor-john-mayall\/"},"modified":"2024-07-24T18:04:40","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T18:04:40","slug":"eric-clapton-pays-tribute-to-mentor-john-mayall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/101gold\/eric-clapton-pays-tribute-to-mentor-john-mayall\/","title":{"rendered":"Eric Clapton pays tribute to mentor John Mayall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/syndication.abcaudio.com\/files\/2024-07-24\/Getty_JohnMayall_072324.jpg\" alt><figcaption>Chris Walter\/WireImage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Eric Clapton<\/strong> has paid tribute to his \u201cmentor,&#8221; blues and rock legend <strong>John Mayall<\/strong>, who passed away Monday at the age of 90.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before hitting it big, Clapton was a member of Mayall\u2019s band the <strong>Bluebreakers<\/strong>.\u00a0In a video <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C9zzyjtO01x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>posted to Instagram<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">, Clapton thanked Mayall \u201cfor rescuing me from oblivion and God knows what when I was a young man &#8217;round the age of 18, 19 when I decided that I was gonna quit music.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe found me and took me into his home and asked me to join his band and I stayed with him and I learned all that I really have to draw on for today in terms of technique and desire to play the kind of music I love to play,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Clapton called playing in Mayall\u2019s band \u201ca fantastic experience,\u201d noting Mayall taught him \u201cit was\u00a0OK just to play the music you wanted to play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe was my mentor and a surrogate father,\u201d Clapton added. \u201cHe taught me all I really know and gave me the courage and enthusiasm to express myself without fear, without limit.\u201d Clapton then noted that all <\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">he<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\"> taught Mayall was drinking and womanizing, noting, \u201cI wish to make amends for that. I did that while he was alive and I have obviously since learned that is not the best way to carry on.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI shall miss him but I hope to see him on the other side,\u201d Clapton concluded. \u201cThank you, John. I love you, I\u2019ll see you soon, but not yet, as they say in the <\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Gladiator<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\"> movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Clapton wasn\u2019t the only one to\u00a0honor Mayall. <strong>The Rolling Stones<\/strong>\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C9zIVHlstTP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Mick Jagger<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ronniewood\/status\/1816098062730944559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Ronnie Wood<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\"> both shared\u00a0tributes on social media, as did <strong>Black Sabbath<\/strong>\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/geezerbutler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Geezer Butler<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2024, ABC Audio.
