And while many revere it as the ultimate &#8220;peace and love&#8221; musical experience, some of those who were there don&#8217;t remember it that fondly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joan Baez<\/strong>, who\u00a0headlined the first night of the festival, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2024\/08\/07\/woodstocks-legacy-reflections-from-musicians-who-played-at-the-festival-in-1969-or-attended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>San Diego Union-Tribune<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> &#8220;It was a rare, historic moment, but it\u2019s been over-glorified. People say to me, \u2018Oh, man, you played at Woodstock and you had everything \u2014 the music, the political scene, the community.\u2019 And I tell them: \u2018Yeah, we had the rain and the mud!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grateful Dead<\/strong>\u00a0drummer\u00a0<strong>Mickey Hart<\/strong>\u00a0told the <em>Union-Tribune,<\/em> &#8220;I recall the people who played really well at Woodstock \u2014 <strong>Carlos Santana<\/strong>,<strong> Sly Stone<\/strong> and <strong>Jimi Hendrix<\/strong> \u2014 were over-the-top great. But we just didn\u2019t play well. It was a missed opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Who<\/strong>&#8216;s guitarist\u00a0<strong>Pete Townshend<\/strong>\u00a0didn&#8217;t buy into the scene. He told the <em>Union-Tribune,\u00a0<\/em>&#8220;The dream and ideology of rock \u2018n roll was rooted in the idea that &#8230; the \u2018Woodstock generation,\u2019 were super-luminaries, but I\u2019ve never agreed with that. I always thought that was the biggest crock of s*** America has ever come up with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Billy Joel\u00a0<\/strong>attended Woodstock as a fan, but left after a day and a half. &#8220;I hated it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think a lot of that \u2018community spirit\u2019 was based on the fact that everybody was so wasted &#8230; it was all muddy, and you couldn\u2019t go to the bathroom unless you stood up and went right where you were.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Jefferson Airplane<\/strong>&#8216;s<strong> Grace Slick<\/strong> confirms that, recalling, &#8220;I\u2019m amazed I was able to be on the side of the stage for 12 hours before we played \u2014 without having to take a pee.
