Deep Purple<\/strong> recently launched their =1 More Time tour, and after releasing\u00a0the brand new album\u00a0<\/span>=1<\/span><\/em>\u00a0in July, longtime bassist Roger Glover<\/strong> says there\u2019s a challenge to creating a set list with old and new songs that will please everyone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a huge problem,\u201d he tells ABC Audio, noting they usually need to play several songs from their 1971 album,\u00a0<\/span>Machine Head<\/span><\/em>, which doesn\u2019t leave much room for new songs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Machine Head<\/span><\/em> was such an iconic moment and produced a lot of the, the songs that, you know, we play to this day,\u201d he says of the album,\u00a0which features their biggest hit, \u201cSmoke on the Water.\u201d He adds that because they focus a lot on those songs in concert, they\u2019re constantly hearing from fans who say, “Oh, you don’t play stuff of the new, you don’t play this, you don’t play that.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Glover says this tour will likely feature several songs from <\/span>=1<\/span><\/em>, but notes that it\u2019s not as simple as just plugging the tracks into the set list.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe way we’ve designed the show, it has a pattern to it, has a shape,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd so songs have to sort of fit into that shape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cYou don’t want to sort of leave the audience with a downer and, you know, you want some kind of climax, because that’s what it’s all about, climaxing.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
