Does It Now? The Music and Culture of the Grateful Dead is an eight-week course that kicks off Oct. 3, taught by <strong>David Gans<\/strong>, producer and host of the nationally syndicated <\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Grateful Dead Hour<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The course will feature a variety of Dead-related guest speakers, including\u00a0<strong>David Lemieux<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager;<strong>\u00a0Dennis McNally<\/strong>, former Grateful Dead publicist and author of <\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Jesse Jarnow<\/strong>, producer\/host of<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\"> The Good Ol\u2019 Grateful Deadcast<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the description, the course \u201cwill feature a collection of stories and conversations with scholars and historians, each offering facts and personal perspectives illuminating every aspect of the Grateful Dead culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It will use music from live and studio recordings \u201cto learn what makes the Dead\u2019s music-making unique and explore the broad musical universe the band created in its 30-year history.&#8221; The course will also explore the band\u2019s impact on society, art, literature, social change and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The description notes, &#8220;By the end of the course, students will have a well-rounded appreciation for the roots, struggles, and milestones that shaped the Grateful Dead\u2019s trajectory, an understanding of their profound impact on music and culture, and insight into a legacy that still resonates deeply today.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Registration for the course <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/continuingstudies.stanford.edu\/courses\/liberal-arts-and-sciences\/did-it-matter-does-it-now-the-music-and-culture-of-the-grateful-dead\/20241_MUS-59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>is now open<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2024, ABC Audio.
