{"id":30223,"date":"2024-08-27T12:02:25","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T12:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/101gold\/patti-smith-fights-to-save-new-york-garden-from-demolition\/"},"modified":"2024-08-27T12:02:25","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T12:02:25","slug":"patti-smith-fights-to-save-new-york-garden-from-demolition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/101gold\/patti-smith-fights-to-save-new-york-garden-from-demolition\/","title":{"rendered":"Patti Smith fights to save New York garden from demolition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/syndication.abcaudio.com\/files\/2024-08-26\/Getty_PattiSmith_082724.jpg\" alt><figcaption> Dimitrios Kambouris\/Getty Images for The Gordon Parks Foundation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Patti Smith<\/strong> is one of several\u00a0famous New Yorkers\u00a0fighting to save a public garden in Manhattan, and it\u2019s a location that\u2019s very important to the rock legend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Elizabeth Street Gardens in Little Italy is set to be demolished, but artists like Smith, <strong>Robert De Niro<\/strong> and <strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong> have sent a letter to Mayor<strong> Eric Adams<\/strong> to try\u00a0to\u00a0stop it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2024\/08\/26\/entertainment\/one-of-nycs-greatest-artists-patti-smith-says-shes-been-creatively-inspired-by-a-public-garden-thats-set-for-demolition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The New York Post<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a><span class=\"s1\">, Patti shares that the\u00a0garden has served as a safe space for her creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve written poems there. I like to sit and think. It\u2019s a good place just to think and contemplate,\u201d Smith tells the paper. \u201cI\u2019m working on a book. It\u2019s a work in progress and when I was in the garden I was writing about my mother.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Patti, who&#8217;s written such books as <\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Just Kids<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s2\"> and <\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">M Train<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s2\">, has also performed at the garden, noting that \u201cit\u2019s not like (a) raucous atmosphere \u2014 it\u2019s a very light-hearted, benevolent atmosphere where people are listening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">She adds, \u201cIt\u2019s inspiring. But it\u2019s also calming. Sometimes I might want to go to the garden not to work, but to exist \u2014 just to feel blessed by my surroundings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI\u2019ve lived in the city off and on for over half a century, and these type of areas are fast diminishing,\u201d Patti says. \u201cAnd they\u2019re worth fighting for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">The Elizabeth Street Garden was built in the early &#8217;90s by developer <strong>Allan Reiver<\/strong>. According to the paper, the demolition is expected to \u201cbegin in a matter of weeks\u201d and is being done to make room for affordable housing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">In the letter to Adams, Smith described the garden as \u201can oasis of green space within our city,\u201d adding it \u201ctruly stands as a work of art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cAffordable housing and green spaces are both essential assets and should not be pinned against each other,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2024, ABC Audio.
