Dave Mason<\/strong>\u00a0will release\u00a0his memoir,\u00a0<\/span>Only You Know and I Know,<\/span><\/em> on Tuesday, and of course a portion of the book is devoted to his time in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Traffic<\/strong>, alongside Steve Winwood<\/strong>, Jim Capaldi<\/strong> and Chris Wood<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mason had a rather disjointed tenure with Traffic, leaving after their 1967 debut album,\u00a0<\/span>Mr. Fantasy<\/span><\/em>, only to rejoin them\u00a0in 1968 and then get fired after a few months. But despite all the ups and downs, Mason tells ABC Audio he can still take something positive from his time with the group.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t forget, but at the same time, I’m not going to carry lingering resentment and hate and stuff. It’s not worth it,\u201d he shares. \u201cWhat transcends all those personal differences and bulls*** and whatever is the music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mason says\u00a0his firing was particularly hard because he enjoys the collaboration that comes with being in a band, but\u00a0in the end, some musical personalities just don\u2019t work well together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, differences combine to form beauty and so the differences\u00a0are what made things great,\u201d he says, \u201cbut the differences unfortunately drove it apart.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mason left Traffic for good after a brief return in 1971. Other than Mason, Winwood is the only surviving original member of the band. While Mason says he\u2019d be open to a reunion, it\u2019s not going to happen because of Winwood.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s unfortunate that Steve Winwood can’t get together with me and go out and make one sort of last performance of Traffic,\u201d he says, adding that despite their differences he\u2019s more than willing to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just open to doing it,\u201d he says. \u201cYou know, we don’t even have to talk, you just have to get onstage for an hour and a half.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
