A long-lost Tom Petty<\/strong> documentary from the ’80s will be hitting theaters in time for what would have been the rocker\u2019s 74th birthday.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> followed Petty and the Heartbreakers<\/strong> during their 1982-83 tour for the album <\/span>Long After Dark<\/span><\/em>. It originally aired on MTV in 1983, but, according to the description, it \u201cwas deemed too experimental and abruptly pulled from the air.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The film was the directorial debut of\u00a0Cameron Crowe<\/strong>, and now Crowe and the Petty Estate have come together to restore the film, adding a new intro from\u00a0the director and 20 minutes of previously unreleased footage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c’Heartbreakers Beach Party<\/span>‘<\/span><\/em> occupies a special place in my heart,\u201d Crowe shares. \u201cI\u2019m so happy we\u2019re bringing it back in all its reckless glory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The film is set to have a limited run in theaters\u00a0on Oct. 17 and Oct. 20, the latter being Petty\u2019s birthday. Tickets <\/span>are on sale <\/strong><\/span><\/a>now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The documentary announcement\u00a0follows the recent news that a\u00a0<\/span>deluxe edition of 1982’s Long After Dark<\/em>\u00a0is coming on Oct. 18.\u00a0The album features\u00a0the singles “You Got Lucky,” “Change of Heart” and “Straight Into Darkness.”<\/p>\n

The deluxe edition includes the remastered original album, plus 12 bonus tracks, among them Petty’s versions of his songs “Never Be You” and “Ways to Be Wicked,” which were previously recorded by\u00a0Rosanne Cash\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Lone Justice<\/strong>, respectively. Other additional tracks were taken from sessions for French TV.<\/p>\n
