Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of John Lennon<\/strong>\u2019s fifth solo album,\u00a0<\/span>Walls and Bridges<\/span><\/em>, which went to #1 and features \u201c<\/span>Whatever Gets You Thru The Night<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d\u00a0Lennon’s first\u00a0U.S.\u00a0#1 as a solo artist, and his only solo song\u00a0to top the chart in\u00a0his lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album was recorded during Lennon\u2019s \u201clost weekend,\u201d the 18-month period\u00a0in which he was separated from wife Yoko Ono<\/strong>\u00a0and was in a relationship with his assistant May Pang<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pang tells ABC Audio that <\/span>Walls and Bridges<\/span><\/em> was one of John\u2019s \u201cproudest moments,\u201d not only because of the #1 single, but because\u00a0\u201che did it all in eight weeks from start to finish.” She noted he was “jumping around” when he finished the record and handed it in.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pang appears on the album\u2019s second single \u201c<\/span>#9 Dream<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d which was a top 10 hit. She can be heard whispering John\u2019s name in the song, although fans\u00a0probably didn’t think it was her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo this day, people didn’t realize it was me,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause you had the natural assumption, of course,\u00a0(it’s) Yoko.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And while\u00a0\u201cWhatever Gets You Thru The Night,” which featured Elton John<\/strong> on backing vocals and piano, did top the chart, Lennon wasn\u2019t so confident it would get there.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the recording of the tune, Elton\u00a0bet Lennon the song would go to #1, with Lennon agreeing to join him onstage if it did. After losing the best, Lennon\u00a0made a guest appearance at Elton’s Nov. 28, 1974, concert at Madison Square Garden, performing \u201cWhatever Gets You Thru The Night,\u201d and The Beatles<\/strong>\u2019 “I Saw Her Standing There\u201d and \u201cLucy In The Sky With Diamonds.\u201d He also played tambourine on Elton\u2019s encore of \u201cThe Bitch is Back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The concert would wind up being Lennon’s last major concert appearance.<\/p>\n
