The Tony Award-winning play <\/span>Stereophonic<\/span><\/em>, which opened on Broadway in April<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>is loosely based on the making of Fleetwood Mac<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0iconic album <\/span>Rumours<\/span><\/em>, and now one of the producers associated with\u00a0the album is suing over it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ken\u00a0Caillat<\/strong>, who co-produced <\/span>Rumours<\/span><\/em>, has filed a lawsuit against the writer and producers of <\/span>Stereophonic<\/span><\/em>, alleging the play\u00a0used portions of his\u00a02013 book, <\/span>Making Rumours: The Inside Story Of The Classic Fleetwood Mac Album,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>without permission.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the suit, which was also filed on behalf of Caillat\u2019s co-author Steven Stiefel<\/strong>, the pair claim\u00a0<\/span>Stereophonic<\/span><\/em> \u201ccopies the heart and soul of <\/span>Making Rumours<\/span><\/em>, and is substantially similar,\u201d noting they\u00a0didn’t\u00a0authorize the play\u2019s writer,\u00a0David Adjmi<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>to \u201ccopy, reproduce, or create a fictional adaptation or derivative work of their book.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe striking similarity is readily apparent right from the beginning of the show,\u201d the suit notes, pointing to <\/span>Stereophonic’<\/span><\/em>s setting of a recording studio, with the audience watching from the perspective of the engineers and producers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe set of <\/span>Stereophonic<\/span><\/em> essentially places the audience in the very chair where Mr. Caillat sat as he engineered and produced Fleetwood Mac\u2019s <\/span>Rumours<\/span><\/em>, as Plaintiffs vividly described in <\/span>Making Rumours<\/span><\/em>,\u201d reads the suit.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u00a0adds that while Adjmi\u00a0claims the show\u00a0isn’t\u00a0about the making of <\/span>Rumours<\/span><\/em> or based on Caillat\u2019s book, the play \u201cpresents a nearly identical story arc\u201d as the book.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0plaintiffs are\u00a0suing for copyright infringement and are seeking to recover damages, profits, attorneys fees and costs, noting\u00a0they may also look for an injunction to stop the performance of <\/span>Stereophonic<\/span><\/em> \u201cif necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Caillat, father of singer\u00a0Colbie\u00a0Caillat<\/strong>, recently gave an interview with <\/span>The<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>New Yorker<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>where he detailed the similarities of his book and the play, including portions of dialogue he believes\u00a0were taken right from his book.<\/span><\/p>\n
