On This Day, Oct. 15, 2006 …<\/span><\/p>\n

New York\u2019s famed punk rock club CBGB closed following a dispute over money between owner Hilly Kristal<\/strong> and the venue\u2019s landlord, Bowery Residents Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Opened on Dec. 10, 1973, CBGB \u2014 which stood for country, bluegrass and blues \u2014 helped launch the careers of such artists as the Ramones<\/strong>, Talking Heads<\/strong>, Blondie<\/strong> and Patti Smith<\/strong>, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith performed at the closing night concert, with guest appearances by Flea<\/strong> of the Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/strong> and Television<\/strong>‘s Richard Lloyd<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The club’s\u00a0second awning, which\u00a0was out front\u00a0when CBGB\u00a0closed in 2006, is now featured in the lobby of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n
