Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> has commented on the recent death of One Direction<\/strong> singer Liam Payne<\/strong> at the age of 31, telling\u00a0<\/span>The Telegraph<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>,<\/span><\/em> \u201cThat\u2019s not an unusual thing in my business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a normal thing. It\u2019s a business that puts enormous pressures on young people,\u201d he elaborated. \u201cYoung people don\u2019t have the inner facility or the inner self yet to be able to protect themselves from a lot of the things that come with success and fame. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

Springsteen\u00a0says to compensate artists turn to drugs or alcohol \u201cto take some of that pressure off,\u201d something that\u2019s not foreign to him or his band.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I\u2019ve had my own wrestling with different things,\u201d he says. \u201cDrugs were not uncommon in the E Street Band<\/strong>, you know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Bruce drew the line on those things affecting his live shows.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI stayed out of your business, but if I was on stage and I saw that you were not your complete self, there was going to be a problem,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so it made a bit of a boundary around that stage, where people had to be relatively sober and at their best.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cAnd I always say, one of the things I was proudest of is that if one of my fellas passed on, they passed on of natural causes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After Springsteen\u2019s manager Jon Landau<\/strong> mentioned artists who died young like Kurt Cobain<\/strong> and Jimi Hendrix<\/strong>, Springsteen added, \u201cand people continue to fall to it. It\u2019s a death cult.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a grift, man. That\u2019s a part of the story that suckers some young people in, you know, but it\u2019s that old story,\u201d he added. \u201cDying young \u2013 good for the record company, but what\u2019s in it for you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
