Warren Haynes<\/strong> and Phish<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Trey Anastasio<\/strong> and Mike Gordon<\/strong>\u00a0are among the artists who’ve taken to social media\u00a0to pay tribute to Grateful Dead<\/strong> bassist and co-founder Phil Lesh<\/strong>, who passed away Friday at the age of 84.<\/span><\/p>\n

Haynes, who performed with the offshoot band\u00a0The Dead<\/strong> in 2004 and 2009, and with Phil Lesh and Friends<\/strong>, wrote a <\/span>lengthy tribute<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, sharing what he learned playing with Lesh over the years. He\u00a0wrote that Lesh\u2019s death was \u201ca huge loss to the music world and to our beloved musical community,” noting, \u201cThere\u2019s a whole type of music fan and a whole type of musician that exists due to something that Phil helped create.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Anastasio <\/span>wrote<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that Lesh \u201cwas more than a revolutionary, groundbreaking bass player,\u201d adding, \u201cHe transformed how I thought about music as a teenager.\u201d He shared that when he got to play with Phil he learned \u201cthat beyond being an astounding musician, he was a truly kind and wonderful man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Phish\u2019s bass player Mike Gordon<\/strong> <\/span>wrote<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that Lesh had a \u201cprofound influence on all of us,\u201d adding, \u201cThe Grateful Dead were uniquely moving, and I always felt Phil\u2019s contribution was at the pinnacle of that magic.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Setlist.fm<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Phish also paid tribute to Lesh on stage, opening their show Friday in Albany, New York, with\u00a0Grateful Dead’s \u201cBox of Rain,\u201d a song Lesh co-wrote and sings on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other artists who paid tribute to Lesh include <\/span>John Mayer<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,<\/strong> who plays with Dead & Company<\/strong>, <\/span>Sammy Hagar<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <\/strong><\/span>Allman Brothers Band<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, The Beach Boys<\/strong>\u2019 <\/span>Al Jardine<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Chuck D<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and others.<\/span><\/p>\n
