Elvis Costello<\/strong> never went after Olivia Rodrigo<\/strong> for a writing credit on her <\/span>SOUR<\/span><\/em> tune \u201c<\/span>Brutal<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d despite many people agreeing it sounded just like his hit \u201c<\/span>Pump It Up<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d and now he\u2019s explaining why.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a new interview with\u00a0<\/span>Vanity Fair<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Costello says people don’t cover “Pump It Up” \u2014 rather, he says, they “allude to it in their own arrangements. Like Olivia Rodrigo’s producer obviously did.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Now, I did not find any reason to go after them legally for that, because I think it would be ludicrous,” Costello continues. “It\u2019s a shared language of music. Other people clearly felt differently about other songs on that record.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Costello may have been referring to\u00a0Taylor Swift\u00a0<\/strong>with that comment; Taylor and her producer\u00a0Jack Antonoff\u00a0<\/strong>are listed in the credits of\u00a0<\/span>SOUR\u00a0<\/span><\/em>as co-writers of the songs “Deja Vu” and “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back.” That’s because of the similarities between “Deja Vu” and Taylor’s song “Cruel Summer,” and the fact that “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” interpolates Taylor’s song “New Year’s Day.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Costello continued to explain his point of view to\u00a0<\/span>Vanity Fair<\/span><\/em>, noting, “[I]f there were no [musical] quotations, there\u2019d be no\u00a0Bach<\/strong>. There\u2019d be no\u00a0Mozart<\/strong>. There\u2019d be no\u00a0Sonny Rollins<\/strong>. So we can\u2019t start worrying about that. That’s the way it works. One thing leads to another. That’s all I’ve ever been saying.”<\/span><\/p>\n
