KISS<\/strong>\u2019 Gene Simmons<\/strong> recently shared his thoughts on so-called \u201cbass virtuosos,\u201d telling <\/span>Guitar World<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> they were simply \u201cshow-offs in music,\u201d but that doesn\u2019t mean there aren’t bass players out there who impress him.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, who are his favorites? They include The Beatles<\/strong>‘\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/strong> and The Rolling Stones<\/strong>\u2019 Ronnie Wood<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

McCartney\u00a0is Simmons’ top pick, telling <\/span>Guitar World<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>he\u00a0\u201cis probably the most influential bassist for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest compliment I can give Paul McCartney is that you can pick the vast majority of Beatles songs and you\u2019ll remember what the bass was playing,\u201d he says. \u201cSo McCartney is hands and feet above the other guys. He\u2019s a triple threat \u2013 he wrote songs that were unmatched, became the most successful songwriter of all time, and he wrote them by himself.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Wood, he points to his time with the Jeff Beck Group<\/strong>, sharing, \u201cThose first two records were pivotal. They came out before Led Zeppelin<\/strong>; I heard that stuff and was awed by how free-flowing they were.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Other bass players getting props from Simmons include Mountain<\/strong>\u2019s Felix Pappalardi<\/strong>, Yes<\/strong>\u2019 Chris Squire<\/strong> and Carol Kaye<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s also a fan of Van Halen<\/strong>\u2019s Michael Anthony<\/strong>, noting he \u201cnever got a lot of attention \u2013 but he\u2019s really good. I remember being impressed with him when I produced that first Van Halen demo.”<\/span><\/p>\n
