Queen<\/strong> recently released the box set <\/span>Queen 1,<\/span><\/em> dedicated to their self-titled debut album, and in the latest installment of their\u00a0<\/span>Queen The Greatest<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0video series, they are giving fans a little insight into the making of the record.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guitarist Brian May<\/strong> and drummer Roger Taylor<\/strong> share what it was like when they got into the studio for the first time, with Taylor noting, \u201cit was tough in the beginning,\u201d because they could only get\u00a0studio time\u00a0during odd hours when it was free.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the difficulties, which also included different producers and pressures to sound a certain way because of the studio, May notes, \u201cI think us as a band, we came through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But when the album came out in 1973, critics were indifferent, with Taylor calling it a \u201ctsunami of nothing.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTell you what helped, we looked at some of the reviews for the Led Zeppelin<\/strong> albums that had been out at that time, some of which were appallingly bad,\u201d May shares. \u201cAnd we thought, well, if they can run these people down, we shouldn\u2019t be too worried about being run down ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The audience also helped, with May noting, \u201conce we had that first album out we had an audience that understood us and were really behind us \u2026That really gives you the energy you need.”<\/span><\/p>\n

With the new box set, Queen was able to use modern technology to right some of the wrongs they felt happened during the recording.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEssentially with the <\/span>Queen 1<\/span><\/em> box set we\u2019ve made the actual album sound the way we wanted it to sound,\u201d Taylor notes. \u201cThe overall sound of it is better \u2026 I think we\u2019ve greatly improved it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
