Over the five decades that Saturday Night Live <\/em>has been on the air, almost ever major rock or rock-adjacent act has appeared on the show. So in honor of the show’s milestone 50th season, Rolling Stone<\/em> has ranked\u00a0its\u00a050 greatest musical performances.<\/a><\/p>\n

Topping the list is David Bowie<\/strong>‘s 1979 performance of “The Man Who Sold the World<\/a>,” during which he was carried to the mic by performance artists Klaus Nomi<\/strong> and Joey Arias<\/strong>. Why? Because he was encased in a plastic tuxedo that made it\u00a0difficult for him to move.<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone<\/em> chose that performance over the other two Bowie did that night, which were just as weird: He sang “TVC15” while wearing a pencil skirt\u00a0and performed “Boys Keep Swinging” while using special effects to place his head on a marionette.<\/p>\n

Number two on Rolling Stones<\/em>‘ list is The Replacements<\/strong>‘ 1986 performance of “Bastards of Young,” during which singer Paul Westerberg<\/strong> shouted, “Come on f*****!” at guitarist Bob Stinson<\/strong>. According to Rolling Stone,<\/em> Lorne Michaels<\/strong> was furious and said they’d never perform on TV again, though they did return that night to sing “Kiss Me on the Bus.”<\/p>\n

Number three is Elvis Costello<\/strong>‘s legendar<\/a>y 1977 appearance, where he stopped his agreed-upon song, “Less Than Zero,” and then kicked into the then-unreleased track “Radio Radio.”<\/p>\n

Number 4 and 5\u00a0are\u00a0Prince<\/strong>‘s 1981 performance of “Partyup” and Radiohead<\/strong>‘s 2000 take on “The National Anthem.”<\/p>\n

Others that made the list: Neil Young<\/strong>‘s “Rockin’ in the Free World”;\u00a0R.E.M<\/strong>.’s “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”;\u00a0Pearl Jam<\/strong>‘s “Alive”;\u00a0George Harrison<\/strong> and Paul Simon<\/strong>‘s acoustic duet of “Homeward Bound”;\u00a0Tom Petty<\/strong>‘s “Free Fallin'”; U2<\/strong>‘s “I Will Follow”; Talking Heads<\/strong>‘ “Take Me to the River”;\u00a0The Rolling Stones<\/strong>‘ “Shattered”; and Smashing Pumpkins<\/strong>‘ “Cherub Rock.”<\/p>\n
