Director James Mangold<\/strong>\u2019s long-in-the-works Bob Dylan<\/strong> flick <\/span>A Complete Unknown<\/span><\/em>, starring Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong>, is finally hitting theaters on Dec. 25, and\u00a0the director\u00a0reveals in a new interview how the pandemic may have helped in the film’s development.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mangold tells <\/span>MOJO<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> that while the pandemic delayed the film, it also allowed him a chance to get more time with Dylan himself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBob had a tour that he\u2019d just cancelled, and he asked to read the script, and that was the start of our connection,\u201d Mangold shares. \u201cHe liked what I was doing and saw that I didn\u2019t have some kind of agenda.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen we sat down and had a series of one-on-one meetings, four or five times for at least a half day, just the two of us drinking coffee,\u201d he adds. \u201cAnd it became a huge opportunity for me to fill in the cracks in the story that the many books about him don\u2019t cover.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Chalamet had been cast to play Dylan since 2020, and Mangold says, \u201cI thought he was perfect for it from the start and remained so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTimmy\u2019s incredibly sharp, witty, ambitious, kind of wonderfully odd and cool,\u201d he says. \u201cI felt he kind of could really embody a lot of things that Bob was, especially in that early time in his life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The film, which Mangold describes as \u201ca fable,\u201d covers\u00a0a five-year period of Dylan\u2019s early career \u2014 and that was enough for the director.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel pressure to define Bob for the ages and all his work over decades,\u201d\u00a0Mangold says. \u201cI\u2019m just talking about the moment that this guy blossomed, he became empowered, and then moved on. And where he moved to is either another movie or another writer\u2019s business.”<\/span><\/p>\n
